Reading New Year’s Resolutions

            Happy New Year, everyone! It’s 2025 and the Calhoun County Library would like to help you with your New Year’s resolutions. Come join our programs that feature exercising, learning skills, and playing games.

            Did you know that the library is the perfect place to fulfill your New Year’s resolutions? If you have made a commitment to exercise more, join our fitness classes! We have two classes that will get you moving. Yoga meets every Monday from 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM. In this class, you will focus on your breathing and relax your body. Yoga class is $2 a class or $7 for the month. We also have Strong & Limber which meets every Tuesday and Friday from 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM. In this class, you stretch and learn to balance. Strong & Limber is $2 a class or $14 for the month.

            Would you like to find out how Yoga poses help your  body move, you can Google it - unless your computer skills are rusty. If you need to refresh your computer skills or learn from scratch how to use a computer, then head to the library every Wednesday from 3 PM - 5 PM for our Adult Computer Class. Do you need to make an email account? We can help! Do you want to write a resume or story? We can help! Do you want to start a project but need to design it? We can help! This class is self-paced and completely free to attend every week. The best part is, unlike school, if you miss a class, you won’t be behind! Come learn some new skills or even refresh the computer skills you already have with us.

            If you aren’t interested in fitness or you are already good with a computer, head to the library to play BINGO and have some fun and win great prizes! BINGO meets on the first Thursday of every month from 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM. If you think you have what it takes to win, come play BINGO. We play 5 rounds, each one with a different strategy. Every win gets a special prize and the grand prize gift card goes to whomever gets blackout on their card. We have given out Piggly Wiggly, Amazon, and VISA cards for our winners so come play  with us!

             Do you know what else you can do at the library? How about reading some great books? If you made a resolution to read more this year, the library is open for you to come pick out anything you would like!  If you’d prefer to stay at home, you can use the Libby App to choose your books online. We all know that reading opens up a world of possibilities, so open a book and enjoy the adventure.

            We love that our community comes together for special events and we want to make sure everyone knows what we have to offer throughout the year. Whether you want to be social or not, we have something for everyone here at the Calhoun County Library. If you haven’t made any New Year’s resolutions yet, there is still time! The library will be here waiting to support you!

Christmas with the Calhoun County Library

             Santa Claus visited the Calhoun County Library during the Cookies with Santa event last week.

Cookies with Santa was held on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, from 3:30 PM - 6:30 PM and we had over 200 people come to celebrate this holiday season. We started the event with Santa flying in on his reindeer, bells ringing as he walked into the library, since we don’t have a chimney to come down! Santa was happy to take pictures and listen to what every boy and girl wanted for Christmas, but he already knew since he has read so many letters lately! Between taking pictures with Santa, we had bunches of craft stations ready to make stuff like ornaments for your trees and paper reindeer. Of course, we couldn’t have an event without snacks so we had treat bags of cookies and fresh hot chocolate with whipped cream and sprinkles! That wasn’t the end of the event though. The fun didn’t stop there.

Porkchop Productions performed at 5 PM with their play “Holly and the Secret Santa.” Holly, one of our favorite elves, was putting together a secret Santa party and guess who she pulled to buy a gift for: Santa himself! She then had to figure out the best gift to get him. We don’t want to give too much away, but we do want to say that the play was really funny and gave all the viewers a very special message. It doesn’t matter what gift you give to someone or how much the gift costs as long as you gave it with love and put thought behind it. Porkchop Productions always put on a great show and give even greater life lessons that we want everyone in our community to remember.

Thank you to everyone who came to visit us during Cookies with Santa. We hope that everyone had a great time both at the event and with family and friends over the holidays. Next time you read an article from us, it will be 2025!

A Calhoun County Library Grinch Christmas

            The Calhoun County Library has started to celebrate the holiday season and a special guest has been causing a ruckus: a green creature with a small, cold heart. Can you guess who that is? Let us tell you about him and his chaos!

            The first appearance made by the Grinch was during our monthly BINGO program. On Thursday, December 5, 2024, from 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM, we carried on with our normal program. We were playing traditional BINGO, four corners, and even planning on playing blackout when a hairy, green body came strolling in! Mr. Grinch was trying to call out the numbers on the balls, but he was also trying to steal all the prizes for himself. Don’t worry. We made sure all the winners got their prizes that they rightfully won! Be sure to join us for the next BINGO program on Thursday, January 2, 2025, from 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM to see if you can win the grand prize!⁠ We hope that we won’t have the Grinch trying to get those presents for himself.

            A few days later, the Grinch was spotted at the St. Matthews Christmas parade on Saturday. The Calhoun County Library’s Bookmobile got lights hooked up and joined in with Christmas music playing from the speakers and the evil Grinch was there to get some attention! He first gave out some candy canes and when he ran out, the Grinch may have tried to take the parade watchers’ candy. He wasn’t successful in his mission, but it was still so much fun seeing all the smiling and laughing faces. If you missed the parade, there is another chance to see the Bookmobile and the Grinch. Join us on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at 10 AM for the Sandy Run Christmas parade!

            The Grinch has been the star of the show lately during some of the Calhoun County Library’s programs. Each appearance has him growing nicer and his love of reading even bigger. If you see the Grinch around the library, make sure to tell him that you love reading, too!

Holidays at the Library

            The holiday season is upon us and the Calhoun County Library is ready to celebrate with you. The Friends of the Calhoun County Library are hosting another special book sale this week that you do not want to miss and the following week is the Calhoun County Library’s annual Christmas event: Cookies with Santa and Porkchop Productions!

The holidays are right around the corner and buying gifts can be a difficult task. Do you know what makes great presents? Books! The Friends of the Calhoun County Library have tons of books that they want you to put on your shelves or give to a loved one. There are books for everyone! The library has made room on its shelves for new books, so there are tons of books to choose from at the Friends Book Sale. They have all genres, sizes, and even large print, too! The best part is the price! You might even find the hard-to-find book you have been looking for. There may even be some DVDs for sale. You have to come check it out to find out!

And we’re adding a little EXTRA SPECIAL SURPRISE in the month of December! In order to show our support for our local schools: if you are a TEACHER, all books are only 10 cents! This includes the Friends regular book sale on Tuesdays from 2 PM - 5 PM and the above dates for the Friends Winter Book Sale.

If you are looking to volunteer somewhere for the holidays, we would love to have you help with this sale! As a thank you for helping, you will get paid in books ($10 of books per hour worked). We look forward to seeing everyone at Cookies with Santa. Make sure to wear your Christmas apparel for your pictures, get a great snack, and see an entertaining performance by a wonderful group of people!

This is the time of the year that is full of cheer, thanks, and happiness. The Calhoun County Library appreciates all community members who spend their time at the library and want to celebrate the holidays with us!

A Thankful Teen Thanksgiving at the Library

            The Calhoun County Library held a Thanksgiving Feast for Teen Night last week and gave them a lesson in table etiquette and manners.

Sometimes, when you sit down at a table full of delicious food, the first thing you want to do is dig in! However, on Tuesday, November 19, our teens had to wait and follow a certain protocol using table manners. As they entered “la biblioteca ristorante,” they were greeted by two hostesses.  We decided that we would complete the meal with light piano music to really set the scene. Before their meal, these teens learned the details of the table setting including which fork was the salad fork, which fork was the dinner fork, and where the dessert utensils were placed. They learned a few guidelines like how to properly cut meat, where to put your napkin, what the bread plate is for, and why you have two glasses. Along with that information, they learned not to put their elbows on the table, not to chew with their mouths open, and how to politely ask someone to pass items on the table. During the meal, the teens learned how to have appropriate conversations, such as what they would like to do after completing school and what their hobbies include, as if they were preparing to speak to a date’s parents. Some of these conversations were ones that the teens came up with themselves and some were suggestions that they pulled from a conversation starter cup.

 The teens were seated at a beautifully set table and had a great Thanksgiving feast full of yummy food, great conversations, and interesting facts. We don’t want to make anyone hungry, but we had some excellent mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, rolls, Chick-fil-A chicken nuggets, and more. To top off their meals, teens enjoyed pecan, lemon, cherry, or apple pies. We realized that we all have much to be thankful for, especially our wonderful community of St. Matthews!

If you or someone you know are between the ages of 12 - 17, we would love to have you for the December Teen Nights! On Tuesday, December 3, 2024, we will be making Christmas ornaments. These will be from 5 PM - 6:30 PM.

Santa is Coming to the Library

            The holiday season is among us and the Calhoun County Library is getting ready to hold its annual Christmas celebration event: Cookies with Santa and Porkchop Productions!

There will be plenty of delicious cookies and warm hot chocolate to go around for all ages.

Teen Night Life Lessons

            The Calhoun County Library had the pleasure of engaging teens during the last two Teen Nights with Vincent Sanders and Lee Hollingsworth for lots of fun and learning!

Accidents involving drinking and driving are a leading cause of death in teenagers in the state of South Carolina. In order to teach the teenagers of our county about the dangers of drinking and driving, we invited Vincent Sanders from Tri County Commission on Drug and Alcohol Abuse to visit our teens during  National Red Ribbon Week. Teen Night, held on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, was an important, educational one about prevention. Vincent brought drunk goggles, which simulate an experience when you are under the influence of any substance. Once the teens placed these goggles on their heads, everything got distorted and their depth perception and movements were impaired. Attempting to walk or perform simple tasks were met with little success. While the teenagers thought it was funny seeing their friends almost run into objects and fall over, they understood how harmful this could be outside of a game. The really exciting party occurred when everyone went out into the parking lot and attempted to drive an adapted go-cart through a series of traffic cones while wearing the goggles. They truly got to experience attempting to maneuver a vehicle through cones while impaired, and they realized the impact that alcohol or drugs can have. This was a life lesson that will hopefully stay  with them. Thanks to Vincent Sanders for impacting our teens.

After learning about the influence of drugs and alcohol, teens joined us on November 5 to learn about taking care of their cars. Lee Hollingsworth from Hutto’s Transmission came to us to teach Calhoun County teens important tips involved with maintaining a car. Do you know how to change a tire, check the oil, and jump the battery? Calhoun County Library teens do! Teens who may just be starting out driving need to know how to do these tasks and even teens who have been driving for a while need a refresher. Lee gave our attendees proper instructions and then they had an opportunity to perform these hands-on experiences to make sure that they were doing it correctly. They learned how to use a lug wrench, how to plug a tire, how to jumpstart a battery, how to change a tire, and how to put air into a tire. Lee also gave the teens a peek into  how to install custom lights and speakers in their cars. Our teens learned a lot about car care and road safety; in fact, maybe some adults could have learned a lot, too!

These last two Teen Night’s held crucial information for our soon to be young adults of our county. With Vincent Sanders and Lee Hollingworth’s help, we were able to give them the information they needed in a fun way. Big shout out to Vincent and Lee for volunteering their time and knowledge to help our teens. We appreciate you!

If you are between the ages of 12 and 17, please join us for the next Teen Night on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, from 5 PM – 6:30 PM. This event is free to attend and on the 1^st and 3^rd Tuesdays of the month. We love having fun with the Calhoun County teenagers as we give them a break from school and a chance to not only have fun with friends but also learn important lessons in life with us!

Boo Bash! BLOWOUT!

            Complete with our giant spider web and black widow out front, the Calhoun County Library held its annual Boo Bash last week and it was a great time for everyone!

            On Thursday, October 31, 2024, from 5 PM - 7 PM, we held our Halloween event. We had games galore, including the fan-favorite Monster Mash where kids ranged from confused, scared, or even disgusted when they reached behind a curtain to touch items like witches’ fingers, vampire’s hearts, monster’s eyeballs, or mummy’s skin. Don’t worry, nothing was too bad for our brave little trick-or-treaters and all of it came out of our kitchen! What makes it so scary is the fact that kids were sticking their hands into an unknown substance without seeing it and the library might just have had a friendly ghost who wanted to grab their hands!

            After visiting the Monster Mash, everyone had a great time playing games, winning prizes, getting candy, and snacking on fresh spun cotton candy from Twisted Sugar. Almost 800 people- yes, 800- visited the library in those two hours and we loved seeing every one of them. There were so many cute and interesting costumes. Some of our favorites might have been sharks, movie characters, animals, and puns! Everyone knows that the library loves some good puns. Even our library staff dressed up as some. We literally had staff members dressed as cinnamon sugar, pumpkin pie, and ginger - the Spice Girls. We had an old bat, which is what Batgirl turns into as she ages, too!

            We had the best time seeing all the costumes, playing games, and eating cotton candy with trick-or-treaters of all ages. We really do live in a special place, Calhoun County, and we love serving our community. Next Up: Cookies with Santa and Porkchop Productions on December 17, 2024. Celebrating New Babies

            The Calhoun County Library held its annual Community Baby Shower last week and it was a huge success for welcoming new babies in our county.

            They say raising a child takes a village; therefore, we wanted to support as many new parents as we could by showing that the library is a part of that village. On Tuesday, October 15, 2024, we had fifteen new parents along with their guests attend our Community Baby Shower. We have many community resources here in Calhoun County for parents and there are numerous professional healthcare offices that you might not know are available. We had representatives from the area give away free goodies and information. Representatives from Early Learning Academy, First Steps, OCAB, Family Health Centers, Inc., and MUSC are here to make your life easier with a new baby.

            Of course, we couldn’t have an event for new parents without refreshments and door prizes. There were so many prizes that every parent walked away with items for their new addition. These prizes included diaper genies, toys, white noise machines, and more. We even had Pack n’ Plays, bassinets, bouncy seats, and walkers that were brand new to give away!  Very special door prizes we offered  were handmade blankets from our very own Mother Goose, Mary Jo Springs! As a thank you for attending our event, every parent received a goodie bag with diapers, wipes, bibs, blankets, and multiple board books to start their very own library for their little one.

            The only requirement that we had to attend this event was be a Calhoun County resident and either be expecting, adopting, or having had a baby within 12 months. That’s all!

            We would like to thank so many people for making this event possible. We would first like to thank all of the parents who came to celebrate their child with us. We hope that we made them feel welcome and helped them get ready for their bundle of joy. We would like to thank all of our volunteers who helped to make sure this event ran smoothly, and we would like to especially thank all of the donors who donated funding or items for our door prizes. We would also like to express our gratitude towards all of our speakers and sponsors: Calhoun County, Calhoun County Public Schools, Family Health Centers, Inc., MUSC Health, Help Me Grow South Carolina, Tri-County Commission on Alcohol & Drug Abuse, Head Start, Calhoun County First Steps, OCAB, Friends of the Calhoun County Library, DHEC, and Natural Teacher.

            We had a blast celebrating all of our new parents! This event is so important to our community and we love that we can help ease the stress of welcoming a new life. Boo Bash! Extravaganza!

The Calhoun County Library is getting ready to have a scary good time on Halloween night!

If you are out and about trick-or-treating in the town of St. Matthews, stop by the library for some indoor fun! If you need a break from walking around getting candy, come play some games and get books, prizes, and even more candy! We will be having Boo Bash! on Thursday, October 31, 2024, from 5 PM - 7 PM. We will be playing games, which includes Toss Dem Bones, Pin the Spider on the Web, Eyeball Toss, and many more. We will even be bringing back one of the favorites, which is Bat Bullseye! Come take your chances and see if you can shoot hanging bats with a Nerf gun! In addition to winning prizes, we will be giving out candy and something even more exciting: freshly spun cotton candy from Twisted Sugar!

Last year, we had almost 700 trick-or-treaters visit us throughout the night. Let’s see if we can top it this year!

Bookmobile’s Outreach

            The Calhoun County Library has a very active Bookmobile schedule that allows everyone in the community to have access to our portable library!

            Are you an avid reader or movie watcher? Do you want to get free materials without having to leave your home? If you answered yes to both of those questions, we want to help you! We offer home deliveries on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month. This is when we come to your house and drop off the materials you requested. You don’t even have to leave your house for the library to come to you.

            In addition to home deliveries, we take our very fancy, full Bookmobile out to many places. We visit The Gressette Center, Counsel of Aging, Press Academy, Beulah United Methodist Church Afterschool Care, and more! During these visits, we do many activities such as making ice cream in a bag, playing BINGO, reading stories, and having fun. We also invite everyone to take a look around the Bookmobile and see if any books, movies, or Playaways spark your interest. You can check out everything right then and there. If you don’t have a library card, there’s no need to worry. We can sign you up for one!

            The Calhoun County Library wants everyone to be able to have access to library materials. So, if you can’t come to us, we will come to you!

Reading Has Never Been So Easy!

            Reading has never been so easy at the Calhoun County Library.

We have a variety of audiobooks ready to be checked out. We have standard CD audiobooks, Playaways that are audiobooks on the go, and even brand new read-along books designed for children called Wonderbooks. Wonderbooks by Playaway are books that have a ready-to-play mechanic that allows kids to hear the words as they follow along with the book. With each player, you can adjust the volume, start and pause, switch the reading modes, and so much more! Wonderbooks make it easy for a child to learn to read with all the great stories and fun sounds.
